Be sure to check the type of treat people are interested in under the "Treat Types" column. Some people open to "Any" treat—that means any medium, and any number of recipients. But others have different boundaries and interest levels; be sure to double check!

For those of you nuglets just joining our exchange, we toss around the word "treats" like Sera tosses around bees. But for those of you returning, we've changed how you can opt into receiving them.

How To Receive Treats

Treats are OPT-IN. You will need to enable treats on AO3, and include your preferences for treats in each request in the description box. If you only want certain types of treats, please use the description box to state your preferences.

If you do NOT specify treat preferences, we will assume you do not want to receive any!

You can use the following template to state your treat preferences:

Open to Treats: Yes / No
Open to Treat types: Fanart, Fanfiction
Open to Multi-recip treats: Yes / No

If you are open to all types of treats, you can simply say "Treats welcome!"

Next, we have a treatless list! Those of you who have participated before know that the treatless list is a staple of this exchange and we’re excited to have everyone chipping away at it again. We have something new we’re trying this year. The first page shows what we're trying this year - anyone who doesn't have a treat that's either art or a fic of at least 500 words. However, for those who want the version we've used previous years, the next page has the traditional treatless list - no approved treats of any sort. Click here to peruse the list.

We’ve made a lot of changes this year, so we’ll be asking for your feedback after author reveals. Watch this space!

We are thrilled that everyone is so excited for this year’s exchange! This year there will be two rules changes which will include new fields in your sign-up.

We are adding a RATINGS field for the rating of work you would like to give/receive (based on Ao3′s ratings of General, Teen and Up, Mature, and Explicit), and a TREATS field (labeled as ‘Character’) to indicate what kind of treats, if any, you are open to receiving for your requested relationships.

With the additions of the RATINGS field, we would like to state that while anyone is allowed to participate in the Black Emporium Exchange, gifts rated Mature or Explicit are only suitable for participants 18+. That means if you are under 18, you cannot request, offer, nor create any pairing with a rating at Mature or Explicit levels.

For the safety of all, we are not asking participants to disclose their age nor will we "investigate" anyone. However, should we learn of someone breaking this rule, that participant will be quietly and privately disciplined, up to and including a permanent ban. We thank you for your understanding.

A treat is a work composed for the Black Emporium Collection outside of your assignment. A treat is extra, i.e. you are free but not obligated to create it on top of your assignment. This is possible in the following ways:

A fanwork for an un-requested pairing on the nominations list. Is there a pairing on there you just absolutely want to write something for and no one requested it? You can post it to the collection as a treat!
A fanwork that fills a request of one of the participants you weren’t assigned to. Maybe one of the requests on this list just grabs you and you can’t help yourself. We feel you. We really do.

If you create a fanwork for a participant of the Exchange, you are obligated to follow that person’s squicks/triggers and pairings. If your treat doesn’t have a particular recipient, it must still be tagged appropriately (i.e. warn for potentially triggering content, rating).

A treat does not have a minimum word count requirement; it doesn’t need to have over a 1000 words like your assignment fic does. A treat may also be a manip on its own, unlike an assignment artwork.

You do not have to be signed up to post a fanwork to the collection! All you need is an AO3 account; if you don’t have one, you may message the mods and we will get you an invitation. The collection is open to treats from now up to September 30th. It will be inaccessible to anyone but the creator and the mods until that time.

How to post your treat:

1) Log into AO3 and go to the exchange profile.

2) Select "Post to Collection"

3) Under Gift this work, type in your recipient’s name. If it’s a treat, type in the person whose prompt you used for your fanwork if you used one; otherwise, you can leave this form blank to just make a general gift to the community.

4) Scroll to the bottom, post your fanwork! Voila, you are done!

After that, the mods will take a look at your fanwork; if we have any follow up questions, we’ll email you at the address listed on your Ao3 account.

Well folks it is time for our Treatless pledge drive. We don't want your money, oh no, we want your time. You see, at this moment we are sitting pretty with half the collection having at least one treat and one assignment in, but our other half only has one work in the archive for them. In hopes of making Rare Pair Christmas even better and more special, we'd like to ask if you could spare time to write up treats for teh remaining treatless on our spreadsheet. Every drabble, sketch, moodboard, and other fandom lovelies count for treats!

Sweet nuglets,

I apologize that I am posting this a few hours late. The Black Emporium team had some bad news last night, and updating the list of treatless just plain old slipped my mind until I woke up this morning. As such, we'll get two rounds of updates today. I would also like to give a shout out to the people on our discord for stepping forward to help. We <3 you all, sweet nuglets.

OK, sappy stuff done. Now: As a reminder, works are due in on November 13. You may continue editing your work post that date, but all fics need to be complete (eg have a beginning, middle, end) and all artwork needs to be complete (eg no "placeholder" characters) on that date. Tonight I will post a countdown to help people figure out how much time they're going to need to get their fic/art finished in time.

For those who have finished their assignment or just want to have fun, the treatless list is below. We try to make sure that everyone has a little something extra under their tree since rare pairs are, well, rare. As a reminder, treats do not have to conform to the same type of fan work or rules; you can upload drabbles, moodboards, quick sketches, etc. - and treats can be posted post-turn in date, too.

If you’ve finished your fic or art early or just need a bit of a palate cleanser, why not write a treat? =D As a reminder, treats do not need to be fic or art and can be less than 1,000 words. Rare pair day comes but once a year after all :D

Good day, sweet nuglets! As the winter gets a crisp bite to the air and the temperatures drop, we rare pair lovers keep warm, inspired by the passion of our favorite pairs - and all the yummy fic and art that's soon to unlock!

As a reminder, there are EIGHT days left to write your fic or draw your art. It is due on November 13th; you must submit a fic or art piece to our Ao3 collection at that date.

You all have been busy, busy bees (Sera would be proud); we are currently sitting on 35 submissions in our collection! That's a lot of treats already sitting, waiting to be devoured!

Our trophies have been updated as of Saturday thanks to ever so lovely Mod K, with several now unlocked! Cassandra is the first character to get to 5 submissions total, while all m/m, f/f, and het trophies were hit in Inquisition. For the lovely people in our group - as in Thedas - love is love. :D We're very close on unlocking several more, so check the spreadsheet and see if you can give it a go!

We are also in the midst of updating the treatless list. Starting tomorrow, I will post the needy list on the tumblr and dreamwidth sites under the tag betreatless. We were able to get everyone at least one treat for spec recs, so we are hoping we can do the same in BE as well! :D

As a reminder, if you would like a beta to look at your art or fic, you can do so either through our Google group here, or the Discord chat here. Please include a few basic facts for your beta when you advertise: what the couple is and/or what the game is, content warnings for anything that might upset a beta, and what type of services you'd like to receive.
